State your name, your kennel, and where your kennel is located.

We are located in Kansas. Oliver, the owner of Pure Stone Kennels is located in Modesto, California. I recently had the opportunity to expand his line, and be a part of a great team.

What type of dogs do you breed, and what inspired you to get involved with that particular breed? 

We breed XL American Bully’s at PSK over at both locations. My inspiration stemmed from a college football injury I suffered back in 2017. I got my first bully (Ms. Bear) to help me cope and adjust to life after football. 

Aside from bully’s, I personally breed basset hounds as well. I had no intention on breeding bassets, but after getting my male and seeing how well he matured, it was a no brainer. I saw an opportunity to better the breed so I chose to get a female, who will be ready at the end of 2022.

What is your favorite bloodline?

I would have to say that old school Duke Reyes blood. Dogs like Reyes Stone, Ron’s Payday, and Sunlines Flowban Monster are my favorite dogs of all time.

In your opinion, what are the characteristics of a responsible dog breeder?

I think an ethical breeder is a responsible breeder. Making sure you are crossing all your T’s and dotting all your I’s when breeding is the best thing you can do. Contracting everything to make sure your productions are protected is very important. Also,  having the appropriate living conditions at your kennel is a must.

What type of diet do you keep your dogs on throughout the year?

I usually feed an all raw diet, but there are times when I feed kibble only. I don’t have any specific diet. Sometimes my dogs don’t prefer to eat kibble, especially the girls when they’re in heat, so I try to accommodate them as much as I can.

How many times a day do you feed your dogs?

We feed our dogs twice a day with treats and snacks throughout the day to keep them satisfied. Things like homemade protein balls are good for them to snack on when they aren’t stuffing their faces.

How do you keep your dogs in shape throughout the year?

I pretty much live out in the country here in Kansas, so when ticks aren’t in the fields I let them run free, especially in the winter. During the summer I walk them two or three times a day, when the heat is acceptable enough to my liking. 

Also, of course play time in the yard usually gets the job done. I’m currently building them an A-frame now so they can get some additional exercise in.

Walk us through the process of purchasing a pup from your kennel from start to finish.

• Following confirmation of a litter non refundable deposits will then be accepted. I have contracts for deposits, as well as contracts for final sale when you pick the puppy up or have them transported by me. 

• You will read the contents of the contract with me or someone from my team to make sure you thoroughly understand the agreement. 
• I require pictures of your living situation, as well as a run down of your lifestyle to make sure having a dog is a good fit for you. 
• Regarding the pups, I only do pet homes unless otherwise stated. 
• I also require you to take the pup to a licensed vet within 48 hours of acquiring the pup. If you do not take them to a vet, then the responsibility is no longer on me.

Do you currently show any of your dogs?

We do not currently show any of our dogs. Personally shows are not my thing, but I do plan on doing a show when the time is right.

What advice does Pure Stone Kennels have for any upcoming breeders?

Opinions are nothing but opinions. You know the saying, everybody has one. As long as you are being an ethical breeder, the rest will come as you progress in the “bully game”.  Also, build relationships with the proper individuals, your relationship in some cases can hold more weight than the money.

What do you think is the most difficult thing for people in the bully game to overcome?

Coming in with the mindset of pleasing yourself, rather than pleasing the spectators.

How do you think they can overcome this thing?

Breed with the intent to please yourself. There are billions of people on earth, meaning there is a market for your style of bully. Staying true to yourself would be my best advice.

Who do you look up to in the bully game, and why?

Definitely Oliver, the owner of PureStoneKennels. Whenever you mention his name there is never anything bad to say in any way. He is truly one of the stand up people in the bully community. 

Without Oliver, I don’t know if we would even be doing this interview. A couple of other people are my guys, like Jaime and Hector. Jaime pretty much taught me everything I know about the bloodlines in my program. I had the pleasure of doing business with Hector over at Commerce Kennels on my first breeding about a year ago, and it has been a great relationship ever since.

Tell us about one of Pure Stone Kennels main goals for 2021.

My main goal for the remainder of the year is to get some litters under my belt. The one singleton I did have last December ended up not making it, but it was a great learning experience that I wouldn’t change.

Describe how you would want things, in the bully breed Community, to be 10 years from now.

I’d like to see more interaction between the different regions of the states. Being in the Midwest, we don’t have as much of a community as the west coast. 

I’d like to play a big part in getting an annual show going in the Midwest for breeders who aren’t really interested in registry shows like myself. It will be something friendly and fun for people and their families to come and enjoy.

What separates Pure Stone Kennels from the competition?

I can truly say there is nothing like what Oliver is producing at PSK. Not to mention, everything in his yard is pretty much produced by him, not bought. Don’t get me wrong, there is nothing wrong with bought, but it’s that much more impressive when your productions are made by you. With that being said, I’d like to do the same and contribute to the tradition of producing dogs that I can look at and know it’s my production.

What other hobbies or interests do you take part in?

I enjoy sports of all kinds, really anything to do with competition. I also enjoy things like music, art, movies, comedy and spending time with my family.

What do you think of Bully Girl Magazine?

Bully Girl is a great vehicle for exposure for breeders just starting out like me, or who have been doing this for a while.
