Phoenix Bullyz: French and English Bulldog Breeder in Arizona
State your name, your kennel, and where your kennel is located.
My name is Brad Ruggles and I run Phoenix Bullyz, located in Phoenix, Arizona.
What type of dogs do you breed, and what inspired you to get involved with that particular breed?
I primarily breed French and English Bulldogs. But I just obtained my first exotic bully and am about to do a collaboration for a second one.
What is your favorite bloodline?
In French Bulldogs, my favorite bloodlines are: Don Choc, Rolex, and Beast Nectar of the Gods.
In English Bulldogs, I like: Compton Blue, Mickey Blue Eyes, and California Chrome.
In your opinion, what are the characteristics of a responsible dog breeder?
I think a responsible dog breeder is someone who always strives to breed a better quality dog than what they have had before.
What type of diet do you keep your dogs on throughout the year?
I use 4 Health Kibble as my base, with additional supplements of some chicken or beef.
How many times a day do you feed your dogs?
I feed my dogs twice a day and I feed growing pups three times a day.
How do you keep your dogs in shape throughout the year?
My dogs play outside in the yard year round. I also walk them regularly, so those two forms of exercise keep them in shape throughout the year.
Walk us through the process of purchasing a pup from your kennel from start to finish.
If you want to obtain a pup from Phoenix Bullyz, the process typically goes like this:
- I usually post a picture of the pups when they are born and within a week’s time I will have deposits on the entire litter.
- Once a prospective buyer puts down their deposit, I will have them review the contract and their deposit will hold a specific pick of the litter.
- Unless the pup fails to pass the health certificate process, all deposits are nonrefundable.
- When the pups are about 4 to 5 weeks old, I will start with the first pick and have the pups assigned to those who are locked in.
- At 8 weeks, the pups have their first shots, dewormer, microchips, and health certificates completed and then I schedule the puppy for pick-up or travel.
Do you currently show any of your dogs?
I currently show my dogs at ABKC, IBR, WBR, and USBR sanctioned shows, as well as fun shows. I would like to show AKC at some point with one of my standard French bulldogs.
What advice do you have for any upcoming breeders?
My advice would be to know what you want your vision to be and build that vision by buying a quality foundation female. Do not cut corners. Make sure that loving your dogs comes first and breeding them comes second. You won’t last long if you don’t have your priorities in the right order.
What do you think is the most difficult thing for people in the bully game to overcome?
Taking an “L.” Taking losses is something that can make or break a breeder. These dogs will take you on a roller coaster ride and if you are not ready for it, you will exit the ride sick to your stomach.
How do you think they can overcome this problem?
I think my best advice would be, “Don’t expect anything and take it as a blessing when things go right.”
Who do you look up to in the bully game, and why?
I look up to Craig Forrester in the UK, who sold me my main stud. His love for the dogs and the time he gives to his clients is really admirable.
Tell us about one of your main goals for 2022.
I’m looking to create more hitters and to produce two more studs for my yard. I am always willing to work with others to create the next big thing, so let's get out there and work together!
Describe how you would want things, in the bully breed Community, to be 10 years from now.
I want the bully community to focus on breeding quality healthy functional dogs, from Frenchies to Exotics.
What separates your kennel from the competition?
I have a medical background which helps make me to be a bit of a fertility guru when it comes to breeding. I also think my focus and passion helps my kennel stand out from our competitors.
What other hobbies or interests do you take part in?
I also enjoy classic cars. I like a lot of different cars but the Impala is definitely my favorite.
What do you think of Bully Girl Magazine?
I really enjoy Bully Girl, and can’t wait to see myself in a future issue! Thank you for this opportunity!
I’m in Phoenix Arizona also off of N BlackCanyon Highway behind the Qt.
