Bossman Kennels: XL and Standard American Bully Breeder in North Carolina

Bossman Kennels: XL and Standard American Bully Breeder in North Carolina

State your name, your kennel, and where your kennel is located.

My name is Olin Leak and I own and operate Bossman Kennels located in Rockingham, NC.

What type of dogs do you breed, and what inspired you to get involved with that particular breed?

Bossman Kennels is home to XL and standard bullies. In 2013, I started nurturing a female Pit Bull by the name of Xena. With initial dreams of getting involved with a large breed, specifically Great Danes, my bond with Xena altered my vision. When Xena was two-years-old, I was presented with the opportunity to breed. My first experience taught me so much about the process and I knew I wanted to operate my own kennel.

What is your favorite bloodline?

There are some amazing bloodlines out there, but with consideration of size and structure, Razors Edge is my favorite bloodline.

In your opinion, what are the characteristics of a responsible dog breeder?

Anyone looking to breed must first establish their “why”. Knowing your “why” will drive your desire to continue to educate yourself and everyone else about the breed. To be a responsible breeder you must have patience and put in 100% effort in every step of the process.

What type of diet do you keep your dogs on throughout the year?

Bossman Kennels maintains a kibble/raw diet. I have found Purina with added protein and vegetables to be the most beneficial. Additional protein and vegetables include but are not limited to: raw chicken, raw beef, raw eggs, pureed pumpkin, carrots, berries, etc. To top it off, I often add coconut oil.

How many times a day do you feed your dogs?

The adult dogs of Bossman Kennels are fed one heaping meal a day in the evenings. Puppies are fed three times a day to stimulate growth.

How do you keep your dogs in shape throughout the year?

My dogs truly enjoy being outdoors. For a minimum of 30 minutes a day, they are released into a field that is fenced in to run and play. We also enjoy walks through the neighborhood.

Walk us through the process of purchasing a pup from Bossman Kennels from start to finish.

  • The initial steps of purchasing a pup from Bossman Kennels include building rapport. Gaining information regarding previous ownership of a bully or Pit Bull, intentions of owning a bully, and educating and painting a picture of what it is like to own a bully is vital.
  • With a price quote, the potential owner and I discuss putting down a deposit on their pick of the litter. The pup must be completely paid prior to receiving he/she.
  • A contract is then formulated and sent to be read over. There is room for any and all questions or concerns to be addressed. It is then signed by both parties.
  • Once the pup is at least 8 weeks old, Bossman Kennels prepare arrangements to hand deliver him/her. Hand delivering the pup allows for the opportunity to meet the family and continue to inform them of any current and future needs. One of the many things I enjoy when it comes to breeding is checking in on both the family/new owner and the pup and to offer any additional assistance.

Do you currently show any of your dogs?

Bossman Kennels has recently begun to attend dog shows including events held in Utah. I anticipate having my dogs participate in future shows.

What advice does Bossman Kennels have for any upcoming breeders?

My advice for upcoming breeders is to always keep God first, put in 100% effort, and understand that you get out what you put in. Don’t be afraid to find a mentor that has the experience and can provide knowledge and insight when needed.

What do you think is the most difficult thing for people in the bully game to overcome?

One of the most difficult things in the bully game is knowing who you can trust and understanding that everyone is not going to look out for your best interest.

How do you think they can overcome this thing?

Simply do your part and follow the golden rule: treat others as you want to be treated.

Who do you look up to in the bully game, and why?

There are so many legends in the bully game; I think highly of Fear Kennels. Although we have not had the opportunity to breed together, I can always count on him to have the utmost respect no matter the situation, and take the time to call and check on Bossman Kennels to provide useful knowledge. In addition, I value my relationship with ManMadeKennels and his entire team. Eddie assisted me with launching my first couple of litters and even invited me to Delaware to breed. While in Delaware, I was treated like family and was invited to join in on his family activities.

Tell us about one of Bossman Kennels main goals for 2022.

For 2022, one of the main goals for Bossman Kennels is to increase exposure and earn the respect of the bully community.

Describe how you would want things, in the bully breed community, to be 10 years from now.

Ten years from now, I would want the bully breed community to be one large family. Being able to travel and attend shows and events together, being able to lean on the next kennel for support, and truly impacting the view on the breed would be ideal.

What separates Bossman Kennels from the competition?

Bossman Kennels not only provides structured and well-tempered pups, but being a dog trainer allows for families to receive pups that have been trained to sit on command, wait for food, and are partially potty and crate trained.

What other hobbies or interests do you take part in?

Other hobbies and interests include training dogs of any size or breed and coaching high school football.

What do you think of Bully Girl Magazine?

Bully Girl Magazine is awesome! They produce high-quality content and bring much-needed exposure to the bully world. It’s easy to see the care they have for the bully community and their drive for putting the breed first.
